Creating a Gold Medal Life
This week the world witnessed the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games and I was glad to be a part of it. There is something uniquely unifying and hopeful about watching the “best of the best” come together in peace on the world stage.
Despite the inevitable issues and prevailing politics of the time, at its core the Olympics is about people. People with a passion for what they do. Determined people who know what it means to move through their fears and fatigue. People with pride in themselves, in their team and in their country. People with guts, grit and gumption.
These are qualities that come through no matter what sport I am watching and it inspires me to rise above my own limitations. We all have our own challenges, be they physical, mental or emotional – and Olympic athletes must face all three.
While I love the beauty, grandeur and amazing skill of these athletes, this year I am asking myself what I have to learn from their example. Where can I apply their “guts, grit and gumption” to improve myself? What do they have to teach me about “creating a gold medal life?”
I want to soak in the admiration and inspiration I feel during the games and bring it to mind when I feel bored with the monotony of life “practice;” stymied by negative patterns or just downright discouraged.
I will use it to dig down inside and find the “guts” to keep going; the “grit” to face obstacles and the “gumption” to believe that I can achieve my dreams.
This is the stuff that creates a Gold Medal life. I invite you to go for Gold with me.
