With the passing of Labor Day, many of us are easing back into familiar routines, and this morning I was one of them. After a summer break, my favorite NIA class resumed; which means I got to dance and work out with more than twenty fabulous women.
Have you every returned to an activity and felt something inside sigh “Ahhhhhhhhhh.” It’s like breathing a big sigh of relief. It’s like coming home.
While I danced this morning I tried to tune into what it was that resonated so deeply within me: was it the familiar smiling faces; the music; the movement; working my muscles; clearing my head? And then it came to me.
My NIA class helps me remember who I am. I can almost hear my inner voice saying “Oh yes, this is my nature; this is the essence of who I am; this is what I have to offer to the world. Now I remember!”
The nature of our culture makes it so easy to forget who we really are; to be lulled into the illusion that we are our job, our bank account, our appearance or our credentials. It is easy to be so busy with the “stuff” of life that we fail to pause and remember who we are……who we really are.
There are many ways to remember our inner nature and reconnect with it. For me it is my family, my spiritual community, my inner voice, and yes – my NIA class. It is important to recognize the ways that you “remember who you are,” and they may be very different from mine.
What is crucial is that we remind ourselves regularly and make it a priority to do so. The cultural pulls to forget are powerful and must be met with an equal or greater force if we are to be true to ourselves in the world. And the world needs people who are true to their nature.
So join me in cultivating our inner connection; breathe, sigh, dance, sing, or pray your way into remembering. Discover the power of knowing who you are. The world is waiting.
