These Are the Days You Will Remember

What Memories Are You Making?

footprints on a beachLast weekend I enjoyed a morning walk on a beautiful Texas beach, listening to the mellow voice of JoDee Messina and I heard these words,

These are the days you will remember – for the rest of your life. These are the memories you’ll pack in a box and you’ll pull out sometimes.”

Do you ever have the conscious thought that you’re creating the memories of your future? Have you wondered what you’ll enjoy thinking about as you look back one day? It seems so easy for one day to flow into the next; to let the unconscious part of our brain run on automatic pilot without consideration for what we are creating – in our present experience and our future memories.

As I walked the beach, I was aware of the sunshine, the breeze on my face and the sand on my feet. I felt the joy of the morning. But in hearing the words, “These are the days you will remember” I felt more intensely present in the moment; wanting to soak up the experience clearly so it would be rich when I remembered it.

And I wondered how many moments I live that fully, and how different my life might be if I maintained that awareness. “Am I creating a life I want to look back on?” I wondered. And in the midst of my reflections, I heard her sing,

“So pick your flowers, count the seconds, roll the dice; but don’t wait until it’s too late. Put a smile on your face – these are the days.”

These are the days indeed; the ones we live today and file for the future. So don’t wait. Revel in simple pleasures; take in your full experience; pick your flowers; step out of your comfort zone; do something silly; count the seconds; breathe deeply – often; choose forgiveness; roll the dice; risk rejection; love with abandon; put a smile on your face.

Make today one you’ll want to remember.
