Words From The Heart
The flood of Hallmark card commercials and romance movies remind me that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether they warm your heart or roll your eyes, there is an underlying theme that is worth noticing. Namely that it is important to speak to the people and issues that matter to you.
As simple as this sounds, it is not natural or easy for many of us. It can be difficult to convey words from the heart, even to those closest to us – sometimes especially to those closest to us. Life has a way of getting in the way. Unresolved hurt can create emotional distance. Time passes by making it awkward to reconnect. Emotions can be confusing and hard to put into words. Fear of rejection can silence our words.
There is perhaps nothing more tragic than living with the regret of important things left unsaid.
One of the pleasures of my work is to help people identify what matters most to them and learn to speak to it in a meaningful way.
Issues of “emotional significance” are those things that don’t let go of us; that repeatedly come to our attention despite our efforts to ignore them or brush them off. Sometimes they are the words of affection, sometimes of regret, sometimes of dreams….
I’m so sorry…
You make my day…
I’m afraid…
I miss you…
I wish…
I admire you…
I’m angry that…
I’m grateful for…
One day I want to…
You hurt me…
I love you…
Please forgive me…
What is it that feels unsaid with those close to you? Whether you say it, write it, sing it or act it out – there is no time like the present to breathe deeply and dive into “20 seconds of insane bravery.” What are you waiting for?
Celebrating life and love,
Pam
Yes I’m living this at the moment. Staying silent and not loving like I should have.
Now praying it’s not to late to show my love for my wife in a way that allows her feel loved by me.
It’s a daily struggle and the Lord has promised me it worth the struggle.
